What is a Meal of Remembrance?
A Meal of Remembrance may also be called Messianic Passover Seder. This meal involves the uniting of two ordinary acts that Jesus associated with the new covenant 1) eating of the bread broken and 2) the drinking of the cup of redemption which Jesus called the cup of his blood, these ordinary acts have become sacred and incorporated into the Christian liturgy as communion or the Lord’s Supper which Paul commends to us in 1 Corinthians 11:22-26. During the Thursday Night Meal, we will eat special foods that help to retell the story of the Israelites journey to freedom and then we will experience how Jesus explained the meaning of the New Covenant by revealing his sacrificial role as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world by completing the meal with Eucharist.
This evening is very much a church and community-wide family event that would be very easy to invite friends to especially as it is historic and cultural in nature. But beyond its history, the Messianic Seder tells the story of redemption through Jesus Christ. There will be worship through song and we hope to dance together at the end of the evening. Here are a couple of resources if you would like to learn more about this sacred event: Crivoice.org, and Hebrews4Christians.com.
